Cost Savings Strategies
2. Parking and Transportation: Maintenance of parking structures and parking lots /miscellaneous
Initiated by: Kris Singh and Thomas Pastore
Procedure:
A considerable amount of maintenance that was originally contracted out is now being done in-house. Examples of the types of projects our employees have been able to absorb include minor asphalt repair, painting, striping, sealing, concrete repair, vehicle maintenance, golf cart maintenance, pressure washing, installation of permit machines, and minor electronic component repairs.
Employees have been allowed and encouraged to attend training and seminars on repairs and maintenance so they can effectively pursue these types of cost savings ideas for the department.
During interviews for candidates in the maintenance area, we selected candidates that were skilled in diverse areas of maintenance, not just one specific skill.
Allowing employees to learn and implement something new has contributed to a great part of our success, as well as motivated them. The opportunity for exposure to new industry ideas and expansion of their scope of expertise is a winning strategy for both the university and the employee.
Resultant Savings:
To date, we have saved over $100,000 by implementing this in-house maintenance program.
